Agile Methods for the Development of Healthcare Systems 2017

Agile is not just for software development. Discover more at the INCOSE Healthcare Working Group’s Agile Methods for the Development of Healthcare Systems Conference, May 16-17 outside Chicago, Illinois.

“Medical organizations are realizing that Agile’s not just about software, it’s about developing an entire system,” says Kelly Weyrauch, Principal Consultant at Agile Quality Systems and one of the organizers of this year’s conference.

Recognizing Agile’s potential within healthcare systems, the INCOSE Healthcare Working Group organized this year’s conference around that theme. “A lot of the talks and discussions we’ll be having revolve around how to blend systems engineering and Agile Product Development methods, and then applying that to the medical space,” says Mr. Weyrauch. “Particularly, we want to focus on systems built by large teams and/or systems that include more than software.”

This year’s keynote will be John F. Murray Jr., an Expert Regulatory Review Scientist from the FDA. Mr. Murray’s key role at the FDA is in the preparation and publication of software and computer-related regulations, guidance, standards, and training. He also provides FDA staff and Management with expertise and guidance for FDA “regulated” software and computer systems.

Mr. Murray’s talk will describe current topics and recent FDA initiatives surrounding software products. He will also address common concerns from the industry and the FDA related to agile software development practices and regulatory expectations.

The two-day conference includes multiple learning tracks and collaboration sessions. “The collaboration sessions are somewhat informal, but they get dialogue going about topics that might not be directly covered,” says Mr. Weyrauch. “We also encourage interactive presentations so that both our presenters and attendees have an opportunity to learn from each other.”

The event will be hosted at the conference center provided by the American Society of Anesthesiologists in Schaumburg, Illinois. Lunch will be provided at the meeting facility each day. Rooms can be booked for a discounted rate at the Hyatt House Chicago/Schaumburg. The deadline to register for the conference is May 1, and only a certain number of hotel rooms are available, so attendees are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

“Last year we had a healthy attendance, and we’d like to increase those numbers,” says Mr. Weyrauch. “It’s coming up fast, and we don’t want people to miss out.”
